Global Lead Network: The Global Lead Initiative

The Global Lead Initiative

The Alliance To End Childhood Lead Poisoning launched the Global Lead Initiative as a partnership for implementation – a Type II outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 26 – September 4, 2002.

There were two types of expected outcomes from the WSSD – Type I and Type II outcomes. Type I outcomes include the officially negotiated political declaration and implementation plan which resulted from the WSSD process, while Type II outcomes are partnerships and initiatives negotiated between governments, international organizations, and civil society. The GLI was submitted to the WSSD Secretariat as a Type II Partnership.

The purpose of the Global Lead Initiative is to achieve the expeditious completion of global leaded gasoline phase-out and to reduce and eliminate other exposure sources according to a partnership process with specific milestones and targets. The Global Lead Initiative would translate the many “existing international commitments on leaded gasoline phase-out and lead poisoning prevention into concrete action aimed at eliminating environmental lead hazards. Actions will be developed based on the successful model provided by the Summit of the Americas Partnership for Pollution Prevention and on the principles of the Alliance’s International Action Plan for Preventing Lead Poisoning.

We are pleased to report on the supportive and encouraging reception the GLI received at the WSSD from both governments and non-governmental organizations alike. The Governments of Indonesia, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates have all expressed serious interest in the advancement of the GLI, while the Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS), an NGO based in Calcutta, India, has recently indicated their official joining of the partnership. Additionally, at the UN Health Plenary Session at the WSSD on August 26, 2002, the Government Representative for Romania mentioned the Alliance and the Global Lead Initiative by name during their official statement to announce that they welcomed our initiatives and were interested in participating.

The Alliance continues to actively seek partners to join the Global Lead Initiative. Interested representatives of governments, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental/civil society organizations, business, industry, and other major groups should contact us to discuss opportunities for collaboration. New information will be posted to this website as discussions and negotiations with other potential partners to the GLI occur.
